The fingernail test

Run a fingernail perpendicular across the scratch. If it glides over, the damage is in the top few microns and a professional cerium oxide polish will remove it. If your nail catches, the scratch is deeper than what can be leveled without removing an unsafe amount of glass.

Do the test on both sides. Interior scratches from cargo shifting or a cleaning brush polish out more easily because the inner surface isn't carrying the wiper load or the abrasion history.

What polishing does and doesn't fix

Glass polishing floods the surface with cerium oxide slurry and a felt wheel, removing a very thin, even layer until the scratch bottom is level with the surrounding surface. Done properly by a shop that works on large panes, it clears wiper haze, water spot etching, and light scratches with no visible distortion.

Done aggressively or on deep damage, it produces a lens — a shallow dish in the glass that bends light and warps what you see through it. On a Class A windshield the size of a picture window, that distortion is a real driving hazard, which is why reputable shops set a firm depth limit and recommend replacement past it.

Stop the cause
