Skylights are the first roof component to fail

A skylight dome sits at the highest, most sun-exposed point on the rig and is made of plastic. Ten years of UV turns clear acrylic milky and brittle; at that point a hailstone or a low branch that a new dome would shrug off punches straight through. Most owners replace a skylight after a storm, when the cheaper move would have been replacing it on age.

The second failure is the flange seal. Butyl tape under the flange hardens, the lap sealant on top cracks, and water tracks down the inside of the roof structure — often appearing at a ceiling seam feet away from the actual skylight.

Cost by skylight type

Standard shower and hallway domes are commodity parts in common sizes. Tinted, insulated, and vent-integrated units cost more, as do the oversized panoramic domes on high-line coaches.

Measure the flange, not the hole

RV skylights are ordered by the roof cutout dimension, not the outside flange. The two common cutouts are 14x22 and 16x24 inches, but plenty of rigs use odd sizes. Measure the actual opening from inside, and check the dome height — a low-profile dome won't match the interior trim ring of a high-profile original.
