RV Windshield Leaking Water — Find The Source & Fix It Properly

    An RV windshield that leaks water is most often failing at the gasket or urethane bead, but roughly half of reported windshield leaks actually originate above the glass — at the roof-to-cap seam, the clearance lights, or the front cap joint — and simply run down behind the trim to appear on the dash. Trace it before you seal anything: dry the area, then run a hose starting low at the windshield base and working upward in five-minute stages while someone watches inside. Sealing the gasket on a leak that starts at a clearance light traps the water inside the cap, where it rots the plywood and delaminates the fiberglass. A genuine glass leak on a gasket-set windshield is fixed by re-bedding or replacing the gasket; on a urethane-set panel it means cutting the glass out and re-bonding, because injected sealant on a failed urethane bead is a temporary patch, not a repair.

    Step by step

    1. 1

      Dry and mark

      Towel the dash and the interior A-pillars completely dry, then tape paper towels along the suspect seams so the first wet spot shows exactly where water lands.

      Hose test from the bottom up

      Start the hose at the windshield base for five minutes. No leak? Move to the sides, then the top edge, then the cap seam, then the clearance lights, then the roof line. Stop at the first repeat.

      Check the clearance lights

      Front-cap marker lights are the single most common false windshield leak. Pull one lens and look for cracked butyl behind the base.

      Inspect the gasket lip

      Look for a gasket that has hardened, shrunk at the corners, or lifted from the glass. Press it — a gasket that stays dented is done.

      Probe for rot

      Press the dash corners, the cabover floor and the wall below the A-pillar. Softness means water has been in the structure and the repair scope just grew.

      Fix at the source

      Re-butyl lights, reseal cap seams with self-leveling lap sealant on horizontal surfaces, and re-bed or replace the gasket. Urethane failures need the glass cut out and re-bonded.

    Do this now

    • Hose test bottom-up before applying any sealant
    • Pull and re-butyl the front clearance light bases
    • Check the roof-to-cap seam for cracked or missing lap sealant
    • Press-test the dash corners and cabover floor for soft spots
    • Photograph the gasket corners for your glass shop
    • Run a dehumidifier or fan inside until fully dry

    Do not do this

    • Caulking the windshield gasket before you have found the source
    • Silicone anywhere on an RV — it prevents any future sealant from bonding
    • Non-self-leveling sealant on horizontal roof seams
    • Injecting sealant into a failed urethane bead and calling it fixed
    • Ignoring a musty smell — that is already rot, not humidity

    Why leaks appear at the windshield but start above it

    Water entering at a roof seam or a marker light lands inside the front cap, follows the fiberglass contour down the inside of the A-pillar, and exits at the lowest interior opening — which is the windshield trim. To the owner it looks unambiguously like a glass leak. To a shop, the wet trim is the last stop on the path, not the first.

    This is why competent RV glass shops will not sell you a windshield reset on a leak complaint until a hose test has isolated the entry point.

    Gasket-set vs urethane-set — different failures, different fixes

    Older Class A coaches and many older Class C cabovers use a rubber gasket with a locking bead. Gaskets harden, shrink at the corners, and let water past the lip; they are re-bedded or replaced, and the glass is reusable if it comes out intact.

    Modern coaches and all van-chassis cab glass are urethane-bonded. A urethane leak means the bond has failed or was contaminated at install. There is no legitimate injection fix: the panel is cut out, the pinch weld or flange is cleaned and primed, and a fresh bead is laid with a documented safe drive-away time.

    • Hardened, dented gasket corners = gasket failure
    • Rust or chalky primer at the flange = contaminated bond
    • Whistling at highway speed often precedes a urethane leak
    • Any prior sealant smeared over the bead is a red flag for a resale inspection

    Why is my RV windshield leaking when it rains?
